Using the UltraVNC Repeater with VNCScan

Overview

The very brilliant folks over at UltraVNC have done it again!  They have released the newest version of their VNC repeater. I'll borrow from some of their documentation when showing how it is supported inside of VNCScan.

For starters, you can download the latest build of the repeater below.  The repeater is basically a very simply proxy server but is has some power features for VNC.

The repeater solves the problem of NAT to NAT VNC connections for many situations.  All that you really need to do is run the repeater on a computer at the perimeter of the network and have a port available to it through the firewall.

Simple Server Setup

  1. Download the repeater from here.

  2. Open a port on your firewall for the repeater.  For this example. we'll open TCP port 5902 but you can specify any port that you wish in the repeater.

  3. Run the repeater and tell it to accept connections on port 5902.  It's right in the main window so I won't bother explaining how in this document.

Simple VNCScan setup

  1. Launch VNCScan

  2. Right-click a group and choose to Edit the group from the context menu

  3. Click on the Options tab within the group properties

  4. Type in the remote repeater address and port number.  It must be in the form of ADDRESS:PORT.  In this example, it's server.domain.com:5902

  5. Click OK and begin connecting via the repeater
