Sharing infrastructure information with “sales people”

I received one of those calls that most of you probably get on a daily basis, also. It was a "Cisco consultant" looking to help me with my project plans for the coming years.

I toyed with him a bit by telling him that we switched our entire network over to Sonicwall. He responded by telling me that he heard that Sonicwall switches weren’t great. Yea … I didn’t say that he was a good social engineer.

I can’t count how many times I’ve heard IT Managers and entry level IT Professionals take these calls and completely describe the entire network security system to a stranger on the phone.

My advice: You should absolutely NEVER give out information about your network to anyone who you have not met face to face or vetted through a trusted channel.
