    Failed to connect to server

I just puchased VNCScan for a small school district in southern MO. I am trying to learn the program, so I created a small group and deployed to them--no problem. However, when I try to connect to any of them I get the message "failed to connect to server". I can ping it. I changed passwords for the machines. I logged on as an administrator to he computers and as a student. I disable the Windows firewall. I give up.

    What's going on?

Re: Failed to connect to server

That's odd.  Is this true with any computer on the network?

What version of VNC has been deployed to the comptuers?  Have you verified that the winvnc service is started and running on the computer(s)?

    Thank you,

    Steve Bostedor

Re: Failed to connect to server

Just a quick shout out to my fellow VNCScan user in southern Mo, I'm in Springfield!!! WoOT wOoT! Anyway I had a similar issue when I had more than one version of VNC installed. However doubt that helps.

Re: Failed to connect to server

I purchased and downloaded VNCScan Ultra, Build 2008.6.1.214, on Friday. I installed the program on our domain server, which is in my office. I turned on several computers in an adjoining classroom and scanned them. I found them pushed the program to them, they showed up with a true and false next to each, as well as the login names I used. I then tried to connect to them and view a screen shot. That's when I get the error about not finding the server.

How do I verify the winvnc service is running? I looked in services and I don't see it. Why wouldn't it start on it's own? I do, on occasion, remote desktop to my mail server. Does terminal services interfere with VNC? Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "any computer on the network". Am I suppose to install the program on another computer to see if it works there? I assume the version of VNC I'm deploying is the same as the one I downloaded. I'm not sure what you mean about that either.

I looked for a manual for idiots to download, but couldn't find one. I need to get it going, because I'm suppose to demonstrate it to our School Board a week from tonight.

    Thanks,

Bill Doggrell, Technology Director, Howell-Oregon R-III School District

    Bill,

Can you please deploy VNC to one of the computers again and then copy/paste the script output to here?

    Thank you,

Re: Failed to connect to server

Here is the spript. I noticed it says bad password or user id. It's correct for my domain, that's the administrator password. Is it suppose to be the machine's login and password? But it asked for a domain name, that will not let it join the domain.

I have to go now. I'll be back in my office tomorrow morning.

Re: Failed to connect to server

    Hi Bill,

It sounds like simple file sharing is still enabled on the remote computer.  You can also probably do better by switching the scripting engine to psexec.  Here's how you do that:

    1. Click on the Preferences toolbar icon
    2. In Preferences, choose "Support Files"
    3. At the bottom of that page, switch to psexec for the scripting engine
    4. If a wizard opens to download it, just "next" through it.
    5. Choose OK on the preferences to exit

    Thank you,

Re: Failed to connect to server

I changed the scripting engine and disabled simple file sharing on the clients in the test group(4 machines). That seemed to work. Do I need to install the SP2 patch, or the SP3 patch if I upgrade? I've been reading other discussions and saw it mentioned. Also, are there any configuration changes I need to make for my Win 2000 SP4 machines?

    Appreciate your help.

Re: Failed to connect to server

    Hi Bill,

You might want to apply the XP max-connections patch if you are seeing unreliable scan results.  There's also one for SP3 in XP.  Windows 2000 SP4 doesn't have this problem.  It also doesn't have the Simple File Sharing issue so those should be a breeze to push VNC to.

I don't know why Microsoft decided to ship XP with the simple file sharing turned on by default.  You'd think that it would be smart enough to turn it off once you join the computer to a domain but not so.

    Thank you,

    Steve Bostedor
